The Minifigs and printed parts are bright, detailed, and attractive. Lastly, it needs to be stated how great the graphic design work is on this set. I couldn't believe the PPP when I first saw it and ran the calculation again. The Trolls theme could've learned a lot from this set.Īt 6c per part this set is also incredibly good value, especially considering the licensing costs and all the new elements. This set proves that LEGO can forge partnerships to create these niche themes and create sets that are fun for kids and adults (the appeal of these kinds of movies). The Minions minifigs are also awesomely designed (even if the heads do look terrifying without the eye tiles on). They are really well designed and adding in some movement really increases the playability.
However you feel about Minions I guarantee you will have fun building these, especially if you have kids. It was the perfect challenge for my 6 year old but a little too delicate for my 4 year old. And should also be high on your list when looking for sets for that age of kid where they're starting to get the hang of more challenging builds but aren't ready for some larger, more complex sets. These are an absolute must buy for fans of the franchise, they are great display models (I'm keeping Bob and Stuart on my shelf for a while). Kids can construct 2 toy Minion models at a time and then rebuild Kevin into Bob.

So where does that leave the 2 sets they did release this year? It's unclear why LEGO continued with the release of the two sets, maybe those two were further down the manufacturing process and were already being shipped to stores when COVID-19 hit. I'm curious to see if the license was worth obtaining from Mega Brands Inc. Also my son has asked for this set since he saw it in the summer catalog.
I don't find the Minions particularly annoying and am happy to sit through one of their movies with the kids, so I wasn't put off by the subject matter. Despite their niche appeal, young target demographic, and a potentially Worst Set Name Ever award winning set name, I'm building set 75551-1 - Brick-Built Minions and Their Lair.
